About

Cancer Kids of Hawaii, Inc. is a 501(c)3  non-profit organization devoted to the continuing support of children diagnosed with cancer, and the families that support them.

OUR STORY

Our story is inspired by the experiences of our Executive Director Jena Dando and her son Xander. He was diagnosed at the age of six in April 2011 with Medulloblastoma, a cancerous brain tumor.

Xander underwent six weeks of radiation, multiple surgeries and nine cycles of chemotherapy. He never complained, remained upbeat and positive, and completed his treatment in July of 2012. In February 2013, one week after they returned home from Xander's Make-A-Wish trip, he was re-diagnosed after a routine MRI scan showed spots on his spine. Needless to say, they were devastated; although Xander remained calm and simply accepted that he would have to start his treatment again. This meant missing school, not being able to play with his friends, constant hospital stays, multiple MRI scans, and chemotherapy all over again. Xander started treatment immediately.

Four months later Xander woke from a nap and was never the same. He suffered constant seizures which left him unable to speak, completely diminished his motor skills and left him unable to walk for most of his four month stay at the children's hospital. On October 20, 2013, Xander earned his wings and suffered no more.

Cancer Kids of Hawaii is in honor of Xander Munson, and his fight against childhood cancer.
